Art Center Students Place 2nd in the National AAF Student Advertising Competition, Sponsored by AIM (AOL Instant Messaging)!
June 24, 2008
The Art Center Design College Albuquerque campus placed second in the American Advertising Federation (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition held in Atlanta last weekend. They were among the elite seventeen colleges that advanced after winning their district competitions.
This year’s corporate sponsor was AOL/AIM. Each college team developed an integrated $25 million marketing campaign targeting the 18-24-year-old youth market. For months, students worked to develop a marketing and advertising plan that included creating online advertising, as well as print and television ads, collateral material, promotions, media selections, and appropriately allocating the budget.
During the national competition in Atlanta June 7-9, Albuquerque fought for the coveted AAF award against 16 other colleges, placing second only to Ohio University. The Art Center beat University of Virginia; Texas Christian University; Columbia College; University of Oregon; University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh; University of Nevada, Reno; University of Southern California; Hofstra University; Indiana University; Emerson College, Louisiana State University; Florida State University; Webster University; The George Washington University and Texas State University—San Marcos.
Albuquerque and Tucson campuses swept this year’s District 12 AAF National Student Advertising Competition, placing first and fourth, respectively. The competition was held in Tucson, Ariz., April 18-19. This is the sixth time The Art Center won the district competition and advanced to nationals.
“Placing second in the nation has shown me that when you push yourself towards your goals, it really pays off in the end. There is no better way to learn about the advertising process than by developing a campaign for an actual client” said Laura Sanchez, Albuquerque team member.
The National Student Advertising Competition is the premiere college advertising competition. It provides more than 6,500 students “real-world” experience by requiring college students to design a strategic advertising/marketing/media campaign for one major, corporate sponsor. From over 200 colleges and universities, 17 schools were selected as finalists to present their campaigns to a panel of industry marketing and advertising executives at the AAF National Conference.
The Albuquerque team members included presenters: Tanya Sanchez, Laura Sanchez, Ashley Powers and Jayme Aicher. Other team members included: Casey Bennett, Ashley Betzen, Mallory Carl, Thaddeus Castillo, Marlowe Cubero, Matthew Healy, Reggie Higgin, Mario Juarez, Charity LeDuc, Anthony Lomayesva, Monica Mondragon, Molly Schell, Nadia Smith and Rebecca Trujillo.
Judges for this year’s event included: Amy Craig, Principal Product Manager for AIM; Dave George, Senior Director of Communications on AOL’s Marketing and Operations team; Susan Kim, Creative Director at Advertising.com; Lisa Zullo Lausten, Marketing Director at AOL; and Kate Wulfing, Vice President of Marketing at AOL.

11 Seconds of Fame

Hi everyone,
Today I decided to talk about the 11 Second Club. For those of you who don’t know, this is a website that holds an animation competition monthly. They give out an 11 second sound-bite and participants do an animation that uses the sound-bite and submit it for a prize.
For those of you out there in animation who want to get some recognition for your skills, you might try entering the 11 Second Club contest one month. A student here at The Art Center Design College, Sean Coleman submitted his entry and won 3rd in the February competition. Way to go Sean!

Colorstrolgy

Hi everyone,
Recently I got GDUSA’s current issue which has this year’s color trends in it. As I was reading it I just got to thinking about color, so I went to Pantone’s site and found Colorstrology. You can click on the link and load a page to find out what your, or anyone else’s birthday color is. I thought this was a fun way to use color and interact with the website.
If you do not already prescribe to GDUSA, this is a free magazine for graphic designers and has lots of resources for designers and is packed with current trends in the field. I highly recommend this free publication.
