When I look at movies like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Blade Runner, I’m blown away by the fantastic visuals. Who wouldn’t be in awe over the frighteningly majestic Dark Rider, or the sleek angles of an X-wing? But did you know that all of those amazing images were created on paper first? The process is called Visual Development, sometimes synonymous with concept art (depending on who you talk to in the industry). Visual Development or Viz Dev as it’s called, is the vision that all others in the art department try to achieve. One of my favorite concept artists is a guy named Feng Zhu. I first heard about Feng from another student here at the Art Center, and I was immediately blown away by his talent. You can check out examples of his work at www.fengzhudesign.com/. He has some great tutorials there as well. I think it’s a good idea to draw inspiration and strength from talented individuals. Collaborate and bounce ideas off of your classmates and you’ll see what I mean. Well, that’s all I got to say about that. Have fun, and keep creating!
